What is ISO 14644?

ISO 14644 Definition

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) created ISO 14644, an international standard that regulates the categorization and functioning of cleanrooms and other controlled environments. This standard is crucial in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, aerospace, biotechnology, electronics, and medical device manufacture, where controlling contamination is essential.

The ISO 14644 standard series provides comprehensive recommendations for cleanroom design, categorization, testing, and continuous maintenance. The standard’s most well-known section, ISO 14644-1, describes how air purity is categorized according to the concentration of airborne particles. Based on the quantity and size of particles permitted per cubic meter of air, cleanrooms are categorized from ISO Class 1 (the strictest) to ISO Class 9 (the least strict).

Apart from ISO 14644-1, the standard consists of many other components, each of which focuses on a distinct facet of cleanroom operations:

  • ISO 14644-2: Specifies requirements for monitoring and maintaining particle cleanliness.
  • ISO 14644-3: Describes testing methods for evaluating cleanroom performance.
  • ISO 14644-4 through 17: Cover topics such as design, construction, operation, energy efficiency, and particle deposition rates.

To meet ISO 14644, facilities must implement strict environmental controls, including HEPA/ULPA filtration, pressure differentials, airflow systems, temperature and humidity regulation, and verified cleaning procedures. Maintaining ISO compliance requires frequent monitoring and recertification.

ISO 14644 plays a crucial part in guaranteeing product safety and integrity by establishing cleanliness requirements in high-precision settings. It provides a widely accepted framework that aids businesses in upholding quality control, satisfying legal requirements, and reducing the possibility of contamination in crucial production or research environments.
