According to the ISO 14644-1 standard, a Class 100 cleanroom—also known as an ISO 5 cleanroom—is a strictly regulated space intended to preserve abnormally low levels of airborne particle pollution. According to the categorization, the cleanroom cannot have more than 100 particles per cubic foot (≥0.5 microns) or 3,520 particles per cubic meter. It is one of the strictest cleanroom requirements utilized in vital sectors like semiconductor production, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace.
To meet and maintain ISO 5 standards, cleanrooms must include ultra-low penetration air (ULPA) or high-efficiency particle air (HEPA) filters. These filters are frequently used in conjunction with laminar airflow systems, which evenly route air at high speeds to remove particles. To keep unfiltered air out, these conditions require regulated temperature, humidity, and airflow, usually under positive pressure. Equipment must be built to reduce particle formation, and personnel entering the space must adhere to stringent gowning protocols.
ISO 5 cleanrooms are often used for making sterile medications, creating microprocessors, assembling satellites, manufacturing optical systems, and other tasks where even a small impurity could harm product quality or safety.
