Before joining Servicon, cleaning lead Maranda Magby worked in food service. In August 2020, she left to work surveying households for the U.S. Census Bureau. Knowing the job would end in November, she started filling out job applications. In December 2020, Servicon contacted her about her application, which she didn’t remember filling out.
“You fill out so many applications online, and you never know if some of them are real,” Maranda says. “So when Servicon contacted me, I saw the company was based in California, and I am in Arkansas. I had never cleaned a building other than my home, so I thought it was a scam. But when I heard the job was cleaning an aerospace site in the area, I realized the job was real.”
What seemed unreal was that they wanted her to start immediately. “My soon-to-be boss explained that the person who had been the lead left suddenly, and Servicon needed someone right away. They hired me as a cleaning technician with the expectation I would train to become a lead. I’d never cleaned an aerospace facility before. He convinced me, so I went to the site, and a woman told me what the previous cleaner did. That was a Wednesday, and Thursday, I did the same thing. The following Monday, the other cleaner who didn’t want to be a lead came, and she trained me.” The rest, as they say, is history.
A Love of Learning
Given her start, it is ironic that learning is one of the things Maranda loves most about her job.
“I love to learn; I am a learner,” she says. “I do cyber security training, and I get a certificate after each section I complete. I do at least three a month. I print those all out and put them on my wall. Also, Servicon has a learning portal for training in related jobs. I have earned OSHA, housekeeping, safety, and lead safety training and am working on a few more. I am also setting a good example for my children. I think education is important, and not all kids like going to school, including my son Spencer, who is nine. I am 32 and am showing him that I am excited to go to school. He also sees the certificates, which set a good example. I can show without having to lecture him.”
A Good Combination
Maranda also likes her job’s flexibility—and compensation. “I am licensed to sell life and health insurance and am enrolled in an IT support course,” she says. “I’ve been able to do this because of my job’s flexibility. A lot of people are run by their job. I run my job and do it well. I like the freedom. I am not micromanaged, but if I need support, it is just a phone call or email away. I also like the pay and the benefits. Servicon has allowed me to work full-time and pay my bills and has opened many doors I wouldn’t have thought to knock on.
Industry Advocate
One of those doors she would never have thought to approach is advocating for the industry. Earlier this year, with the help of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, Maranda successfully convinced Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to officially recognize March 24–30, 2024, as Cleaning Week in Arkansas. She is contacting the local radio station to request its help promoting the week, which falls in the last week of March annually.
One more thing Maranda likes is feeling cared for and connected despite her distance from Servicon’s Culver City, CA, headquarters. “You hear about companies that treat you like family, but Servicon does,” she says. “They are very understanding and truly put people before the company. It has a family environment I feel even though I work states away. Most companies can’t create that.”
Una Pasión por Aprender
Antes de unirse a Servicon, Maranda Magby, líder de limpieza, trabajaba en servicios de alimentos. “Uno llena tantas solicitudes en línea, y nunca sabe si algunas son reales”, dice Maranda. “Así que cuando Servicon me contactó, vi que la empresa estaba ubicada en California, y yo estoy en Arkansas. Nunca había limpiado un edificio que no fuera mi casa, así que pensé que era una estafa. Pero cuando supe que el trabajo era limpiar un sitio aeroespacial en la zona, me di cuenta de que el trabajo era real”.
Lo que parecía irreal era que querían que comenzara de inmediato. “Mi futuro jefe explicó que la persona que había sido líder se fue repentinamente, y Servicon necesitaba a alguien de inmediato. Me contrataron como técnico de limpieza con la expectativa de que me capacitara para convertirme en líder. Nunca había limpiado una instalación aeroespacial antes. Me convenció, así que fui al sitio, y una mujer me explicó lo que hacía el limpiador anterior. Eso fue un miércoles, y el jueves hice lo mismo. El lunes siguiente, vino la otra limpiadora que no quería ser líder, y me entrenó”. El resto, como dicen, es historia.
Un Amor por Aprender
Dado su comienzo, es irónico que el aprendizaje sea una de las cosas que más le gusta a Maranda de su trabajo.
“Me encanta aprender; soy una persona aprendiz”, dice. “Hago entrenamiento en ciberseguridad, y recibo un certificado después de completar cada sección. Hago al menos tres al mes. Imprimo todos esos y los pongo en mi pared. Además, Servicon tiene un portal de aprendizaje para entrenamiento en trabajos relacionados. He obtenido capacitación en OSHA, limpieza, seguridad y seguridad en el liderazgo, y estoy trabajando en algunas más. También estoy dando un buen ejemplo a mis hijos. Creo que la educación es importante, y no a todos los niños les gusta ir a la escuela, incluido mi hijo Spencer, que tiene nueve años. Tengo 32 años y le estoy mostrando que estoy emocionada de ir a la escuela. También ve los certificados, lo que establece un buen ejemplo. Puedo mostrar sin tener que darle una charla”.
Una Buena Combinación
A Maranda también le gusta la flexibilidad y la compensación de su trabajo. “Tengo licencia para vender seguros de vida y salud y estoy inscrita en un curso de soporte de IT”, dice. “He podido hacer esto gracias a la flexibilidad de mi trabajo. Muchas personas son controladas por su trabajo. Yo manejo mi trabajo y lo hago bien. Me gusta la libertad. No soy microgestionada, pero si necesito apoyo, está a solo una llamada telefónica o un correo electrónico de distancia. También me gusta el salario y los beneficios. Servicon me ha permitido trabajar a tiempo completo y pagar mis cuentas, y me ha abierto muchas puertas en las que no hubiera pensado tocar.
Defensora de la Industria
Una de esas puertas que nunca habría pensado acercarse es abogar por la industria. A principios de este año, con la ayuda de ISSA, la asociación mundial de la industria de limpieza, Maranda convenció con éxito a la gobernadora de Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, de reconocer oficialmente del 24 al 30 de marzo de 2024 como la Semana de la Limpieza en Arkansas. Ella está contactando a la estación de radio local para solicitar su ayuda para promocionar la semana, que cae en la última semana de marzo anualmente.
Otra cosa que le gusta a Maranda es sentirse cuidada y conectada a pesar de su distancia de la sede de Servicon en Culver City, California. “Escuchas sobre empresas que te tratan como familia, pero Servicon sí lo hace”, dice. “Son muy comprensivos y realmente ponen a las personas antes que a la empresa. Tiene un ambiente familiar que siento aunque trabaje en otros estados. La mayoría de las empresas no pueden crear eso”.
