Guadalupe Aguilar joined Servicon in 2017 as a part-time custodial technician while she was in college. She graduated in 2020 and started working full-time in the commercial cleaning services sector, and in 2021, she moved to the healthcare sector as a hospital environmental services (EVS) technician.
“It was a little scary switching to healthcare during the COVID pandemic,” she admits. “People would ask, ‘Why are you going into healthcare and exposing yourself?’ But it wasn’t as bad as people made it sound once you learned the correct cleaning procedures and how to gear up with the right PPE. The scary part about being in healthcare is not having information. But we were given the right information, and that, plus learning the proper procedures, helped. Also, the training was really good. PPE and the right training give you confidence, which helps a lot.”
Guadalupe admits moving into healthcare wasn’t her only concern. “At first, I was hesitant and thought maybe there were no opportunities for promotion at Servicon,” she says. But her concern proved unfounded, as she was soon promoted to an EVS supervisor.
“I have 36 people reporting to me,” she says. “My section includes inpatient units, which are a little more hectic. I get there at 2:30 p.m. and make sure all the employees are there. I schedule and give them the keys, do rounding, and ensure they have the necessary supplies. I monitor rooms that need to be done; we regularly clean areas like the nurse’s station and patients’ rooms after they are discharged. I love doing what I do. I love people and the environment.”
The Value of Speaking Up
While Servicon offers promotions, Guadalupe believes those who want to move up need to speak up. “Servicon offers great job opportunities,” she says. “The opportunities for promotions are there, but I think sometimes we hesitate. You have to ask. If you are in housekeeping and looking to move up, someone above you may not know if you don’t say anything. Your supervisor can’t read your mind. And communication needs to go both ways. I let my leaders know I can’t read their minds to know their expectations. I tell them if they want something done a certain way, let me know. Communication on both sides is important. ”
Guadalupe practices what she preaches. While she likes her work as an EVS supervisor, she wanted to find a way to use her marketing degree. Following her own advice, she approached Servicon management to inquire about any opportunity she might have to use her degree within the company. “I graduated and had the marketing degree, but I didn’t have any experience,” she says. “So, I reached out to the marketing department to let them know I was interested. I thought maybe I would not be able to do any marketing since I am in a hybrid role, and I thought I would have to be at the corporate office all the time. But now I am helping marketing on some projects, and I really appreciate the opportunity.”
Hablando Con Confianza

La parte aterradora de estar en el cuidado de la salud es no tener información. Pero recibimos la información correcta y eso, además de aprender los procedimientos adecuados, ayudó. Además, el entrenamiento fue muy bueno. El EPP y la formación adecuada te dan confianza, es lo que ayuda mucho.”
Guadalupe admite que pasarse a la atención médica no era su única preocupación. “Al principio, dudaba y pensé que tal vez no había oportunidades de promoción en Servicon”, dice. Pero su preocupación resultó infundada, ya que pronto fue ascendida a supervisora de EVS.
“Tengo 36 personas que se reportan a mi”, dice ella. “Mi sección incluye unidades de hospitalización, que son un poco más agitadas. llego a las 2:30 p.m. y me asegúra de que todos los empleados estén allí. Programo y les doy las llaves, hago el redondeo y me aseguro de que tengan los suministros necesarios. Superviso las habitaciones que necesitan ser hechas; limpiamos regularmente áreas como la estación de enfermería y las habitaciones de los pacientes después de que son dados de alta. Me encanta hacer lo que hago. Me encanta la gente y el medio ambiente”.
El valor de hablar con confianza
Servicon ofrece promociones, y a la vez, Guadalupe cree que aquellos que quieren ascender deben compartir sus aspiraciones. “Servicon ofrece excelentes oportunidades de trabajo”, dice ella. “Las oportunidades de promoción están ahí, pero creo que a veces dudamos. Tienes que preguntar. Si está en el servicio de limpieza y está buscando ascender, es posible que alguien por encima de usted no sepa si no dice nada. Su supervisor no puede leer su mente. Y la comunicación debe ir en ambos sentidos. Les hago saber a mis líderes que no puedo leer sus mentes para conocer sus expectativas. Les digo que si quieren que algo se haga de cierta manera, háganmelo saber. La comunicación en ambos lados es importante. ”
Guadalupe practica lo que predica. A pesar del hecho le gusta su trabajo como supervisora de EVS, quería encontrar una manera de utilizar su título en marketing. Siguiendo su propio consejo, se acercó a la dirección de Servicon para preguntar sobre cualquier oportunidad que pudiera tener de utilizar su título en la empresa. “Me gradué y tenía el título de mercadotecnia, pero no tenía ninguna experiencia”, dice ella. “Entonces, contacté al departamento de marketing para hacerles saber que estaba interesada. Pensé que tal vez no podría hacer nada de marketing ya que estoy en un rol híbrido y pensé que tendría que estar en la oficina corporativa todo el tiempo. Pero ahora estoy ayudando a marketing en algunos proyectos y realmente aprecio la oportunidad”.
