Liseth Portillo, Servicon good manufacturing processes (GMP) subject matter expert, joined Servicon last May. But she was familiar with the company and knew what she was getting into.
“I worked for a laboratory that was Servicon’s client, so I had met many Servicon employees and even trained some of them in GMP cleaning,” Liseth says. “When the lab shut down, I called Brenda [Servicon Portfolio Manager Sanz McCabe?], and she suggested I work at Servicon. I was happy. I love my work.”
Liseth discovered this love the hard way.
“In 2005, I was diagnosed with really aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer,” she confides. “I was working two jobs, including one in the morning for a big lab where they made chemo and medicine to fight cancer. Then I got divorced; I had to work three jobs and started working in another cancer lab doing GMP cleaning at night. I developed a passion for the work as I have great respect for the work the labs do. It is not just a job. I do it with love for my loved ones, my family and friends, and others who need the medicine they make.”
As a GMP lead cleaner with more than 15 years of experience, Liseth travels wherever she is needed to conduct training sessions that take a week and usually include one to five trainees. The coursework enables her to fulfill her calling.
“I credit my primary education teacher in 1988 in Guatemala with why I like to teach. I consider myself to have a lot of patience, and I love the work I do.”
GMP Cleaning Is Not for Everyone
Liseth realizes not all people share her love for GMP cleaning. “GMP cleaning is not for everyone,” she says. “Some people find having to wear a full bunny suit [full PPE], goggles, and everything scary. We read the SOP beforehand, and I explain what they will wear. I tell them to try it and to tell me if they don’t like it or if it makes them uncomfortable. Also, most shifts are at night; mine is from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. We have to clean the ceiling, the walls, the floors, everything, so the GMP cleaning has to be done at night when no one is there.”
Yet nothing makes Liseth happier than introducing GMP cleaning to those who like it. “A month ago, I trained two ladies, and later, when I observed them, I saw they were happy cleaning,” she says. “One told me, ‘I want to do your job. I want to train people in the future.’ It makes me feel good to know I am helping people do what they like.”
With more than 15 years of GMP cleaning experience, Liseth travels wherever she is needed to train cleaning technicians on the sites where they will be working. The training takes about one week and starts with her explaining the importance of cleaning, general cleaning practices, and site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP). New hires shadow her for the next four days while she performs the processes and protocols, then receive in-depth, hands-on training with supervision and feedback.
Strong Support
According to Liseth, supporting its employees, especially women, and helping them grow is ingrained in Servicon’s culture. “Servicon is a family business, and on the first day, the people who interviewed me said the most important thing is you,” she says. “No one else says that to employees! And the company is very supportive of women. I like to think of myself as a strong woman after what I have been through, and I love that Brenda and Stacey [Wong. Servicon life sciences vice president of strategic partnerships] are strong women, too. They are always open to new things and support me and my ideas. Servicon is a team. We all support each other. Today, a worker had an accident and asked if I could fill the spot. I called a coworker who lives near the site and said, ‘Yes, give me three minutes.’ That is how it is at Servicon.”
Liseth also believes that Servicon helps the community. “Servicon provides jobs for people,” she says. “I have two beautiful boys who are older now, but they went to the Boys and Girls Club when they were young. Sometimes, I would go there and explain about my job because there would be others looking for a job, and I would recommend Servicon. I still do.”

Liseth Portillo experta en la materia de buenas prácticas de fabricación (GMP) de Servicon, se unió a la empresa en mayo pasado. Pero ya estaba familiarizada con la compañía y sabía en qué se estaba metiendo.
“Trabajé para un laboratorio que era cliente de Servicon, así que conocí a muchos empleados de Servicon e incluso entrené a algunos de ellos en la limpieza con GMP”, dice Liseth. “Cuando el laboratorio cerró, llamé a Brenda [Gerente de Portafolio de Servicon, Sanz McCabe], y ella me sugirió que trabajara en Servicon. Estaba feliz. Amo mi trabajo”.
Liseth descubrió este amor de una manera difícil.
“En 2005, me diagnosticaron un cáncer de mama de etapa 3 muy agresivo”, confiesa. “Estaba trabajando en dos empleos, incluyendo uno por la mañana en un gran laboratorio donde fabricaban quimioterapia y medicamentos para combatir el cáncer. Luego me divorcié; tuve que trabajar en tres empleos y comencé a trabajar en otro laboratorio de cáncer haciendo limpieza con GMP por la noche. Desarrollé pasión por el trabajo, ya que tengo un gran respeto por lo que hacen los laboratorios. No es solo un trabajo. Lo hago con amor por mis seres queridos, mi familia y amigos, y otras personas que necesitan los medicamentos que fabrican”.
Como líder de limpieza con GMP con más de 15 años de experiencia, Liseth viaja a donde sea necesario para llevar a cabo sesiones de capacitación que suelen durar una semana e incluyen de uno a cinco aprendices. El curso le permite cumplir con su vocación.
“Atribuyo a mi maestra de educación primaria en 1988 en Guatemala el motivo por el cual me gusta enseñar. Me considero una persona con mucha paciencia, y amo el trabajo que hago”.
La limpieza con GMP no es para todos
Liseth se da cuenta de que no todas las personas comparten su amor por la limpieza con GMP. “La limpieza con GMP no es para todos”, dice. “Algunas personas encuentran terror tener que usar un traje de conejillo de indias completo [EPP completo], gafas y todo lo demás. Leemos el procedimiento operativo estándar (SOP) de antemano, y les explico lo que van a usar. Les digo que lo prueben y que me digan si no les gusta o si les hace sentir incómodos. Además, la mayoría de los turnos son por la noche; el mío es de 6 p.m. a 2:30 a.m. Tenemos que limpiar el techo, las paredes, el suelo, todo, por lo que la limpieza con GMP se debe hacer por la noche cuando no hay nadie”.
Sin embargo, nada hace más feliz a Liseth que introducir la limpieza con GMP a aquellos a quienes les gusta. “Hace un mes, entrené a dos mujeres, y luego, cuando las observé, vi que estaban felices limpiando”, dice. “Una de ellas me dijo: ‘Quiero hacer tu trabajo. Quiero entrenar a personas en el futuro’. Me hace sentir bien saber que estoy ayudando a las personas a hacer lo que les gusta”.
Con más de 15 años de experiencia en limpieza con GMP, Liseth viaja a donde sea necesario para entrenar a los técnicos de limpieza en los sitios donde trabajarán. El entrenamiento dura aproximadamente una semana y comienza con su explicación sobre la importancia de la limpieza, las prácticas generales de limpieza y los procedimientos operativos estándar (SOP) específicos del sitio. Los nuevos empleados la siguen durante los siguientes cuatro días mientras realiza los procesos y protocolos, luego reciben capacitación en profundidad, práctica y supervisada, con retroalimentación.
Un fuerte apoyo
Según Liseth, apoyar a sus empleados, especialmente a las mujeres, y ayudarlos a crecer está arraigado en la cultura de Servicon. “Servicon es una empresa familiar, y el primer día, las personas que me entrevistaron dijeron que lo más importante eres tú”, dice. “¡Nadie más dice eso a los empleados! Y la empresa apoya mucho a las mujeres. Me gusta pensar en mí misma como una mujer fuerte después de lo que he pasado, y me encanta que Brenda y Stacey [Wong, vicepresidenta de asociaciones estratégicas de ciencias de la vida de Servicon] también sean mujeres fuertes. Siempre están abiertas a cosas nuevas y me apoyan a mí y a mis ideas. Servicon es un equipo. Todos nos apoyamos mutuamente. Hoy, un trabajador tuvo un accidente y me preguntó si podía cubrir su puesto. Llamé a un compañero de trabajo que vive cerca del sitio y le dije: ‘Sí, dame tres minutos’. Así es en Servicon”.
Liseth también cree que Servicon ayuda a la comunidad. “Servicon proporciona empleos para la gente”, dice. “Tengo dos hijos hermosos que ahora son mayores, pero iban al Boys and Girls Club cuando eran jóvenes. A veces, iba allí y explicaba sobre mi trabajo porque habría otros buscando empleo, y recomendaría Servicon. Todavía lo hago”.
