COVID Cleaning Services FAQ
COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfecting Services
Below are answers to FAQs regarding COVID-19 cleaning services and COVID disinfecting services.
What is the Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting?
To understand why COVID-19 cleaning services should be followed by COVID disinfecting services, it is useful to know the difference between cleaning and disinfecting:
Cleaning “is properly disposing of unwanted substances from a surface or area. Cleaning usually involves soap or a cleaning formula and some form of agitation, such as the rubbing together of hands or the use of a brush, sponge, running water, or vacuum.”
Disinfecting kills “99.999 percent of the pathogens the disinfectant’s label and its EPA registration says it effectively kills. Disinfectants kill viruses, but only those listed on the label; no one disinfectant kills all microorganisms or bacterial spores. All disinfectants must remain on the surface for the full dwell—or contact—time stipulated by the manufacturer. Otherwise, the surface will not be disinfected. All disinfectants in the United States must be registered with the EPA.”
Cleaning removes 90% of pathogens—but it does not kill them. A disinfectant kills pathogens but does not remove them. To protect against COVID-19, clean, then disinfect.
What Cleaning Products are Effective for Cleaning During the COVID-19 Pandemic?
The use of regular cleaning products is recommended during the pandemic. However, for facilities with confirmed or likely exposure to COVID-19 within the past seven days, routine COVID cleaning services must be followed up with COVID disinfecting services using a disinfectant approved by the EPA to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. During the pandemic, frequent disinfection of high-touch points is also recommended.

Who Should Use COVID-19 Disinfecting Services?
Any facility with confirmed or probable exposure to COVID-19 within the last seven days or those that want to provide building occupants and visitors with the safest, healthiest environment possible should use COVID disinfecting services. Disinfecting should always be done responsibly using the safest disinfectants proven effective against SARS-CoV-2. COVID disinfecting services are not recommended for seldom-used areas or outside areas, such as parks and playgrounds.
What Disinfectants Kill COVID-19?
The EPA’s N List includes the disinfectants approved by the agency to be effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
How Often Should Businesses Clean Surfaces During COVID-19?
The frequency of surface cleaning should be based on usage. According to the CDC, surfaces frequently touched by multiple people, such as door handles or restroom fixtures, should be cleaned and disinfected daily at the minimum. High-touch surfaces, such as grocery carts and keypads, should be cleaned and disinfected before use by a new person.
What are the CDC Guidelines for Cleaning During COVID-19?
The CDC recommends:
- Routine cleaning using soap/detergent and water
- Disinfection of surfaces using a disinfectant on the EPA N List (If these products are not available, a bleach solution containing 5% -9% sodium hypochlorite is recommended. No other concentrations and/or types of bleach should be used.)
- Frequent disinfection of surfaces and objects touched by multiple people.
What is the Cost of COVID Cleaning?
The cost for Servicon’s COVID-19 cleaning services and COVID disinfecting services, Protect & Disinfect and Ultimate Protect & Disinfect, are based on a facility’s size and specific needs.
