When the cleaning company Zoila Salguero worked for cleaning courtrooms lost the contract, she needed another job. Several of her peers who already worked for Servicon said they like the company and that management treats them well. They recommended she apply, so she did. She got the job and started working at one of the largest hospitals in Los Angeles on April 22, 2020.
A Scary Start
Working for the first time in a healthcare environment during the COVID-19 pandemic was stressful. “I felt scared to be in a hospital at first,” Salguero says. “I am normally a happy person, but I was worried about the effect COVID could have on myself and my family.”
To add to her stress, not long after she accepted the position, she was hit in the head and robbed on her way to work.
“I called the hospital to say what happened and that I was on my way,” she recalls. “When I got there, the nurses and hospital and cleaning staff greeted me, calling me by name and helping me. I was happy to know they knew who I was, that the nurses and my managers cared. Being mugged was not a good experience, but I was grateful to know they knew me and were taking care of me.”
The experience represented a role reversal for Salguero, who has spent the last two decades in the professional cleaning industry looking out for the health and welfare of others. That responsibility fills her with pride, and she was grateful that both the company and hospital viewed her wellbeing as their responsibility.
Love & Respect
“I love everything about my job,” she says. “I have been cleaning for 20 years. Cleaning is my passion. I love to clean and help make patients feel more comfortable knowing they are in a clean environment.”
Salguero also likes her employer: “Servicon contributes a lot to the community. The company provides jobs for people, which is very important. I tell other people it is a very good company and if they need a job, they should come work for Servicon. I have a lot of respect for the company and its managers, and I feel they respect me.”
Zoila Salguero: una cuestión de respeto
Cuando la empresa de limpieza donde Zoila Salguero trabajaba limpiando juzgados perdió el contrato, necesitó otro trabajo. Varios de sus compañeros que ya trabajaban para Servicon dijeron que les gustaba la empresa y que la gerencia los trata bien. Le recomendaron que aplicara, y así lo hizo. Consiguió el trabajo y comenzó a trabajar en uno de los hospitales más grandes de Los Ángeles el 22 de abril de 2020.
Un comienzo aterrador
Trabajar por primera vez en un entorno de atención médica durante la pandemia de COVID-19 fue estresante. “Al principio me daba miedo estar en un hospital”, dice Salguero. “Normalmente soy una persona feliz, pero me preocupaba el efecto que COVID podría tener sobre mí y mi familia”.
Para aumentar su estrés, poco después de aceptar el puesto, la golpearon en la cabeza y la robaron camino al trabajo.
“Llamé al hospital para decir lo que pasó y que estaba en camino”, recuerda. “Cuando llegué allí, las enfermeras y el personal del hospital y de limpieza me saludaron, me llamaron por mi nombre y me ayudaron. Me alegró saber que sabían quién era yo, que las enfermeras y mis gerentes se preocupaban. Ser asaltado no fue una buena experiencia, pero estaba agradecido de saber que el personal del hospital me conocía y me estaban cuidando”.
La experiencia representó un cambio de roles para Salguero, quien ha pasado las últimas dos décadas en la industria de la limpieza profesional velando por la salud y el bienestar de los demás. Esa responsabilidad la llena de orgullo y estaba agradecida de que tanto la empresa como el hospital consideraran su bienestar como su responsabilidad.
Amor y respeto
“Me encanta todo sobre mi trabajo”, dice. “Llevo 20 años limpiando. La limpieza es mi pasión. Me encanta limpiar y ayudar a que los pacientes se sientan más cómodos sabiendo que están en un ambiente limpio”.
A Salguero también le gusta su empleador: “Servicon aporta mucho a la comunidad. La empresa da trabajo a las personas, lo cual es muy importante. Le digo a otras personas que es una muy buena empresa y que si necesitan trabajo, deben venir a trabajar para Servicon. Tengo mucho respeto por la empresa y sus gerentes, y siento que ellos me respetan”.
