When you’ve been in the cleaning industry for four decades, you are bound to have experienced change. Yet, in the case of Ricardo Garcia, Servicon account supervisor, it’s what has stayed the same that is most impressive. For 40 years Ricardo has worked at a major medical clinic in El Monte, CA – 25 years for Pedus and 15 for Servicon, which acquired Pedus in 2006. When he got the job, he had no idea it would be his lifelong career.

“A friend who worked there told me the company was looking for someone to work for one month,” he says. “When the month was up, I asked if they needed help longer. My boss told me I could work here as long as I wanted. He liked my work.”

Ricardo liked it, too. “I like my work,” he says. “Otherwise, I would not be here for 40 years. What I like best is to keep the facility nice and clean so that when people see it, it puts a smile on their faces. When people come to the clinic, they can see it is clean, and many people come here now because they know it is clean.”

The only time Ricardo has not worked at the clinic was for two months during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. But he didn’t stay home. Instead, Ricardo went to work at the hardest-hit hospital in the area, where patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were sent for treatment. “I was not scared,” he says. “They did not have enough staff and needed help.”

While Ricardo has witnessed changes in the industry, he believes the basics of cleaning have remained the same. “Forget 40 years; just in the last 15 years, there has been so much change,” he says. “We constantly see new equipment and products on the market. But the basic cleaning procedures have not changed.”

A Loyal Following

A major reason Ricardo continues working at Servicon is his coworkers. He has been told he is the main reason several of his team stay, which makes him feel appreciated. “We have a good team. I have people who have been with me for a long time,” he says. “Two women I hired have been working with me for 26 and 27 years. They tell me not to leave because if I do, they will leave, too. They like their work, but they like me as a supervisor. They say they are grateful they have me. That is very important to me and makes me feel good that I am responsible for them liking their job.”

According to Ricardo, Servicon’s management is another reason he stays. “The company is good to work for; the people are nice,” he says. My boss is appreciative and tells me I do a good job. I knew the founder, Richard. He was nice, and the management now is nice. I like to work for a company that is good to its employees. I have recommended the company to people. I have told them it’s a good company to work for and to try it. Later, they called me and thanked me. They say they are very happy with the job, and they are still working here.”

Ricardo García: 40 años de sonrisas

“Un amigo que trabajaba allí me dijo que la empresa estaba buscando a alguien para trabajar durante un mes”, dice. “Cuando terminó el mes, pregunté si necesitaban ayuda por más tiempo. Mi jefe me dijo que podía trabajar aquí todo el tiempo que quisiera y le gustó mi trabajo”.

A Ricardo también le gustó. “Me gusta mi trabajo”, dice. “De lo contrario, no estaría aquí por 40 años. Lo que más me gusta es mantener la instalación agradable y limpia para que cuando la gente la vea, les ponga una sonrisa en la cara. Cuando la gente visita la clínica, pueden ver que está limpia, y la gente prefiere venir porque saben que está limpia”.

La única vez que Ricardo no ha trabajado en la clínica fue durante dos meses durante lo peor de la pandemia de COVID-19. Pero no se quedó en casa. En cambio, Ricardo fue a trabajar al hospital más afectado de la zona, donde se enviaba a los pacientes con casos confirmados de COVID-19 para recibir tratamiento. “No tenía miedo”, dice. “No tenían suficiente personal y necesitaban ayuda”.

Si bien Ricardo ha sido testigo de cambios en la industria, cree que los conceptos básicos de limpieza siguen siendo los mismos. “Olvídate de 40 años; solo en los últimos 15 años ha habido muchos cambios”, dice. “Constantemente vemos nuevos equipos y productos en el mercado. Pero los procedimientos básicos de limpieza no han cambiado”.

Un seguimiento leal

Una razón importante por la que Ricardo continúa trabajando en Servicon son sus compañeros de trabajo. Le han dicho que él es la razón principal por la que varios miembros de su equipo se quedan, lo que lo hace sentir apreciado. “Tenemos un buen equipo, y tengo gente que ha estado conmigo por mucho tiempo”, dice. “Dos mujeres que contraté han estado trabajando conmigo durante 26 y 27 años. Me dicen que no me vaya porque si lo hago ellas también se irán. Les gusta su trabajo, y les agrado como supervisor. Dicen que están agradecidas de tenerme como su supervisor. Eso es muy importante para mí y me hace sentir bien porque soy responsable de que les guste su trabajo”.

Según Ricardo, la gestión de Servicon es otra razón por la que se queda. “La empresa es buena para trabajar; la gente es agradable”, dice. Mi jefe está agradecida y me dice que hago un buen trabajo. Conocí al fundador, Richard. Era agradable, y la dirección ahora es agradable. Me gusta trabajar para una empresa que es buena con sus empleados. He recomendado la empresa a personas y les he dicho que es una buena empresa para trabajar. Después me llamaron y para darme las gracias pro recomendar a la empresa como un buen lugar de trabajo. Dicen que están muy contentos con el trabajo y que aquí se querdaran”.
