Liz Sanders worked as an assistant director of a childcare network and pre-K teacher for more than 20 years. Yet it wasn’t until four years ago, when she started working as a custodial technician for Servicon, that she felt she had found her true calling. “Everyone in my family has always said I am the cleanest person they ever met because I love to clean—and I do. I love to clean,” she says.

Cleaning isn’t the only reason Liz enjoys her work. “I love cleaning, but the difference is the people around me,” she says. “I feel like they are part of my family, and I am part of theirs. We all get along. I don’t feel like I am just cleaning.

Her work family is sizeable, with an estimated “couple hundred” people working in the aerospace facility in Georgia she cleans. She also likes her industry. “I like working in aerospace. It’s interesting, and I like the atmosphere.”

Smart & Proud

When Liz left education, her niece was already working at Servicon and encouraged her to apply. Her supervisor, Michelle Luna, hired her on the spot. “Michelle trained me on what to use where and when, and I caught on quickly. The work is not difficult, and I am always eager to learn.”

Liz is also eager to ensure the job is done right—and then some. “People tell me all the time how I go above and beyond, and I do because I take great pride in my cleaning,” she says. “I remember one lady who kept staring at me while I was cleaning a window and the sills. I wondered why she was looking at me. It turned out she had noticed I was very detailed in my work. She said to me, ‘Who does that? You take great pride in your work.’ She is right. I do because I love it.”

Others have been impressed with Liz’s attention to detail. Around the end of her second year with Servicon, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, her three surgeries and eight rounds of chemo have left her cancer-free, but she was away from work for just shy of a year.

“When I came back, two engineers were in the breakroom, and they said, ‘Miss Liz, you have only been back three days, and we’ve noticed a difference in the cleanliness of the facility already!’ Also, when I was hired, I was full-time. Now, I am part-time and work at building 293. The people in building 101 say they want me to go back to full-time to work at their building because they miss me.”

The Right Fit

While Liz and her work are obviously appreciated, she is also appreciative. “I was telling my niece a couple of weeks ago how much I love it here,” she says. “I love the company. I love my hours. I love my supervisor, who is not really like a boss; she is more like family. I feel like I can talk to her about anything. She is very understanding. And when I was out for 10 months, the company held my job for me, and not many places will do that.”

Liz believes there is a lot of opportunity for growth at Servicon but says she is happy where she is. “When Michelle got promoted, she talked about a promotion for me. But I prefer what I am doing. I love to clean.”

Su familia de trabajo es considerable, con un estimado de “un par de cientos” de personas que trabajan en la instalación aeroespacial en Georgia donde Liz limpia. También le gusta su industria. “Me gusta trabajar en la industria aeroespacial, es interesante y me gusta la a”.

Inteligente y orgullosa

Cuando Liz dejó la educación, su sobrina ya estaba trabajando en Servicon y la animó a postularse. Su supervisora, Michelle Luna, la contrató en el acto. “Michelle me entrenó sobre qué usar, dónde y cuándo, y lo entendí rápidamente. El trabajo no es difícil, y siempre estoy ansioso por aprender”.

Liz también está ansiosa por asegurarse de que el trabajo se haga bien, y algo más. “La gente me dice todo el tiempo cómo voy más allá, y lo hago porque me enorgullece mucho mi limpieza”, dice ella. “Recuerdo a una señora que no dejaba de mirarme mientras limpiaba una ventana y los alféizares. Me pregunté por qué me estaba mirando. Resultó que se había dado cuenta de que yo era muy detallista en mi trabajo. Ella me dijo: ‘¿Quién hace eso? Te enorgulleces mucho de tu trabajo. Tiene razón. Lo hago porque me encanta”.

Otros han quedado impresionados con la atención de Liz a los detalles. Alrededor del final de su segundo año con Servicon, le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama. Afortunadamente, sus tres cirugías y ocho rondas de quimioterapia la han dejado libre de cáncer, pero estuvo fuera del trabajo casi un año.

“Cuando regresé, dos ingenieros estaban en la sala de descanso y dijeron: ‘Señorita Liz, solo ha regresado tres días y ya hemos notado una diferencia en la limpieza de las instalaciones’. Además, cuando estaba contratado, yo era de tiempo completo. Ahora trabajo a tiempo parcial en el edificio 293. La gente del edificio 101 dice que quiere que vuelva a trabajar tiempo completo en su edificio porque me echan de menos”.

El ajuste correcto

Mientras que Liz y su trabajo obviamente son apreciados, ella también lo está. “Le estaba diciendo a mi sobrina hace un par de semanas cuánto me encanta estar aquí”, dice. “Me encanta la compañía. Amo mis horas. Amo a mi supervisor, que en realidad no es como un jefe; ella es más como familia. Siento que puedo hablar con ella sobre cualquier cosa. Ella es muy comprensiva. Y cuando estuve fuera durante diez meses, la compañía mantuvo mi trabajo por mí, y no muchos lugares hacen eso”.

Liz cree que hay muchas oportunidades de crecimiento en Servicon, pero dice que está contenta donde está. “Cuando Michelle fue ascendida, habló de un ascenso para mí. Pero prefiero lo que estoy haciendo y me encanta limpiar”.
